Ranjeet Kumar Dass was born on 1 December 1965 in Barpeta, Assam, India. He holds a Master’s degree in Botany from Gauhati University and began his professional life as a journalist before entering politics. He joined the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) in 1992, building his political career through organisational work and grassroots mobilisation across the state.
Dass was first elected as an MLA from the Sorbhog constituency in the 2011 Assam Assembly election, marking his entry into electoral politics. He was re-elected from Sorbhog in 2016, subsequently being elected Speaker of the Assam Legislative Assembly, a position he held until he resigned to take on greater party responsibilities.
In December 2016, he was appointed President of the Assam BJP unit, a position he held until June 2021, playing a key role in strengthening the party’s organisational base and electoral strategy in the state. During this period, he relinquished his role as Speaker to focus on party leadership tasks.
In the 2021 Assam Assembly election, Dass contested and won the Patacharkuchi constituency, shifting his electoral base after a decade in Sorbhog. Following the election, he was inducted into the Himanta Biswa Sarma ministry as a Cabinet Minister, overseeing departments including Panchayat & Rural Development, Food & Civil Supplies & Consumer Affairs, Law & Justice, and General Administration.
As of 2026, he continues his service in the Assam government while also playing a senior role within the BJP leadership.
