Later, he started farming, trading, and doing social work. His varied professional roots have given him a mix of on-the-ground and managerial-level understandings.

After a long time of political experience, Rajesh Ram joined the Indian National Congress party, and in 2020, he ran for the election in the West Champaran district (Ramnagar SC constituency). His 2020 election affidavit showed that he had around ₹3.46 crore of assets and ₹49 lakh of debt.
