Pratibha Patil is an Indian lawyer and politician, who was the first woman to serve as president of India from 2007–12.
She completed M.A in political science and economics and later received a law degree from Government Law College.
She joined the Indian National Congress in 1962 as a member of the Maharashtra legislative assembly. Then in 1985 she won a seat in the Rajya Sabha and served as deputy chairman.
However, she left the upper house in 1990 and was elected to represent Amravati in the Lok Sabha in 1991. Then she returned to public service after a gap in 2004 as governor of the northwestern state of Rajasthan.
On the personal front, Patil got married to Devisingh Ramsingh Shekhawat in 1965. The couple has a daughter named Jyoti Rathore and a son named Raosaheb Shekhawat.
