N. Shakthan is a senior political leader from Kerala representing the Indian National Congress, with a long career spanning legislative, ministerial, and organisational roles. He began his political journey through student politics and later rose within the Congress structure.
He was first elected to the Kerala Legislative Assembly in 1982 from Kovalam as an independent candidate and later continued his political career under the Congress banner, winning from Nemom in 2001 and 2006, and from Kattakada in 2011.
He served as Transport Minister in the Government of Kerala (2004–2006) and later held key legislative roles, including Pro-tem Speaker and Deputy Speaker, before becoming Speaker of the Kerala Legislative Assembly in 2015.
His tenure as Speaker was notable as he became the first leader to serve as Pro-tem Speaker, Deputy Speaker, and Speaker within the same Assembly term.
In the 2016 Assembly election, he contested from Kattakada but lost the election, marking a setback after holding a high constitutional office.
As of March 2026, he is contesting the Kerala Assembly election from the Neyyattinkara constituency, continuing his active engagement in state politics and public affairs.
