Pramod Sawant is widely regarded as an unassuming MLA from Sanquelim constituency in North Goa. He was elected twice in the region with no former political experience under his belt. A staunch supporter of the late Chief Minister of Goa, Manohar Parrikar, Sawant was elected as the Assembly speaker by Parrikar, despite never having held a position in the state cabinet. A doctor by profession and an RSS member, Sawant graduated from the Ganga Ayurvedic Medical College in Maharashtra's Kolhapur district and has a Masters in Social Welfare from the Tilak Maharashtra Vidyapeeth. He was chairman of the Goa State Infrastructure Development Corporation, an initiative set up by Parrikar. He was sworn in as the Cheif Minister of Goa on 18 March 2019, following the demise of Manohar Parrikar.
