Nainar Nagendran is the 13th president of the Tamil Nadu BJP, taking over from former IPS officer K Annamalai. He began his political journey with the AIADMK under J Jayalalithaa and served as an MLA from Tirunelveli. From 2001 to 2006, he was a cabinet minister, handling the Electricity, Industry, and Transport departments.
Born on 16 October 1960 in Vadiveeswaram, Nagendran remained with the AIADMK until 2017. After being left out of the cabinet when the party returned to power in 2011, and following Jayalalithaa’s death in 2016, he switched to the BJP.
In 2020, he became the vice president of Tamil Nadu BJP and won the 2021 assembly election from Tirunelveli on a BJP ticket. Today, he is the senior-most among the party’s four MLAs in the state. Known for his calm and low-key approach, Nagendran has stayed away from confrontational politics.
