Mullappally Ramachandran is a strong leader of the Congress and the state president of Kerala. Mullappally, a former home minister in the UPA government and a seven-time Lok Sabha member, started his political career through KSU. He has served as Kozhikode District President and State Vice President.In 1968, he was elected chairman of the Calicut University Union. When the party split in 1978, Mullappally was the first president of the Youth Congress. Mullappally, who was the chairman of the Socialist Forum at the time, was one of the few leaders firmly with Indira Gandhi. In 1984 he was elected to Lok Sabha for the first time from Kannur. Same year Mullappally Ramachandran was directly appointed by Indira Gandhi as KPCC General Secretary. In 1988, he was elected General Secretary of the AICC. Mullappally is also the longest serving Member of Parliament in the State Congress. He was elected to the Lok Sabha from Kannur in 1984, 1989, 1991, 1996 and 1998. In 1991, he was the Minister of State for Agriculture in the PV Narasimha Rao Cabinet. He contested in Kannur in 2004 but lost to CPM's AP Abdullakutty. Later in 2009 Mullappally left Kannur and competed in Vadakara and won the seat . He contested from the same constituency in 2014 and won. In 2009,he was also the Minister of State for Home Affairs in Dr.Manmohan Singh's cabinet.
In 2018, When vm Sudheeran stepped down from thepost of president, Mullappally elected as the President of the Kerala Pradesh Congress Committee.
