Mithun Chakraborty is an Indian actor and politician whose career is notable for being very long, over 50 years, and more than 500 films in various languages. He was a member of the Rajya Sabha for one term and, after that, made a political shift and joined the BJP in 2021. He is still out there among the people and involved in public life.

In 2024, he was honored with both the Padma Bhushan and the Dadasaheb Phalke Award for his contribution to cinema. As of 2025, he is still active in both politics and show business.

Mithun Chakraborty Biography

Born as Gouranga Chakraborty on 16 June 1950 in Calcutta, Mithun Chakraborty is an Indian film actor, producer, as well as a television personality. He expanded his fan base throughout the country for many years and was awarded the Filmfare Award twice and the National Film Award thrice. For a short period, he was also a member of the Rajya Sabha representing the Trinamool Congress, and thus, he took part in the Parliament.

Mithun Chakraborty started his acting journey with the landmark film Mrigayaa in 1976, an arthouse drama which won him the very first National Film Award for Best Actor. The nationwide popularity he owed to Disco Dancer, a 1982 film which opened the doors of commercial success to him and thus left an imprint of his stardom in the early days. He has been cast in varied movies and his filmography includes Tahader Kotha, Swami Vivekanand, Agneepath, Parmatma, Prem Pratigyaa, Avinash, Mujrim, Dalal, Guru, Golmaal, and Oh My God. Besides, Mithun Chakraborty became a household name on Indian television as the Grand Master of the popular dance reality show Dance India Dance.

The political path of Mithun Chakraborty has been all over the map with different stages. Even though it wasn't confirmed, at that time, it was thought that his inclination was towards the left-leaning movements and that he was culturally associated with the CPM during his early career. After that, he came to Parliament as a Rajya Sabha MP from the Trinamool Congress in 2014 but at the end of 2016, he left not only the party but also the seat. On the 7th of March, 2021, at a rally in Kolkata, he switched to the Bharatiya Janata Party.

He appeared in movies and the limelight quite frequently even a few years ago. Up till 2025, he keeps on being involved in politics and taking part in a few entertainment ​‍​‌‍​‍‌​‍​‌‍​‍‌projects.
