Mallanagouda Basanagouda Patil was born on 7 October 1964 in Vijayapura district, Karnataka. He is the son of renowned educationist and politician B. M. Patil. He earned a Bachelor of Engineering degree in Civil Engineering from B.L.D.E.A.'s V.P. Dr. P. G. Halakatti College of Engineering before entering public life.
Patil entered active politics in the early 1990s and quickly established himself as a prominent Congress leader in the Hyderabad-Karnataka region. He first won election to the Karnataka Legislative Assembly from the Tikota constituency and later expanded his political influence across North Karnataka.
In 1998, he was elected to the Lok Sabha from the Bijapur constituency, representing the Congress in Parliament. After returning to state politics, he won multiple Assembly elections and became one of the party's key leaders in Karnataka.
Patil served as Minister for Water Resources in the Siddaramaiah government from 2013 to 2018, overseeing major irrigation projects across the state. He later became Home Minister in the H. D. Kumaraswamy-led coalition government between 2018 and 2019.
Following the Congress victory in 2023, he was appointed Minister for Large and Medium Industries and Infrastructure Development.
Following the formation of the D. K. Shivakumar-led government in June 2026, he took oath as a Cabinet Minister on 3 June 2026 and was subsequently re-allocated the Large and Medium Industries and Infrastructure Development portfolios.
