Lata Wankhede was born in Patharia, Damoh, as the third child among five siblings. Her father, employed as an agricultural engineer in the government sector, frequently moved due to job transfers, leading Lata to complete her early education in Damoh before pursuing further studies in Chhindwara. Following her marriage to contractor and BJP leader Nandkishore alias Guddu Wankhede in 1991, Lata was introduced to politics at the behest of her husband. She embarked on her political journey by winning the position of Panch from Makronia in 1995.
In 2000, she achieved a significant milestone by being elected as Sarpanch for the first time. Over the next fifteen years, Lata's leadership and dedication earned her three consecutive terms as Sarpanch, solidifying her reputation as a formidable figure in Sagar.
Her contributions expanded beyond local governance as she assumed various leadership roles within the BJP. In 2003, she was appointed as the District General Secretary of BJP Mahila Morcha. Displaying her organisational skills and grassroots support, Lata served twice consecutively as the District President of BJP Mahila Morcha in the Sagar district from 2004 to 2010.
Acknowledged for her commitment to women's issues and her astute leadership, Lata Wankhede ascended to higher positions of authority within the BJP. She held the prestigious position of state president of BJP Mahila Morcha. Additionally, Lata's unwavering dedication to the cause of women's rights led to her appointment as the chairperson of the Madhya Pradesh Women's Commission.
