Keshab Mahanta was born on 6 July 1953 in Assam; his father was Late Kaliram Mahanta. He completed his Bachelor of Arts degree in 1972 and became politically active during the Assam Movement period, which later led to the formation of the Asom Gana Parishad. His early engagement in regional political mobilisation shaped his long legislative career.

He entered electoral politics in 1985 and was elected to the Assam Legislative Assembly from the Kaliabor constituency as an AGP candidate. Over the years, he was re-elected multiple times, establishing himself as a consistent regional political figure in Nagaon district and maintaining a strong party presence in the constituency.
