Janak Ram was born on 5 December 1973 in Gopalganj district of Bihar. He comes from a socially rooted background, which influenced his political focus on marginalized and backward communities. He completed his higher education with an M.A. degree from Rajendra College, Chapra. He began his political journey with the BJP and gradually built his base in the Gopalganj region. His breakthrough came in the 2014 Lok Sabha elections, where he was elected as a Member of Parliament from the Gopalganj constituency, defeating his nearest rival by a significant margin.

After his tenure in Parliament, he continued to remain relevant within the party and was later nominated to the Bihar Legislative Council. His administrative career gained prominence when he was appointed Minister of Mines and Geology in the Bihar government under Chief Minister Nitish Kumar.

In March 2024, he was inducted again into the Bihar cabinet and given charge of the Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes Welfare Department, highlighting his continued importance in governance and social welfare policy implementation.
