Giriraj Singh was born to Ramavtar Singh and Tara Devi in Barahiya, District Lakhisarai, Bihar, on 8 September 1952.
He began his political career in the Bihar Legislative Council, serving from 2002 to May 2014. During this period, he held the position of Cooperative Minister for the Government of Bihar from 2008 to 2010 and Minister of Animal Husbandry and Fisheries Resource Development from 2010 to 2013.
In May 2014, Giriraj Singh was elected to the 16th Lok Sabha. He became a Member of the Standing Committee on Labour and the Joint Committee on Salaries and Allowances of Members of Parliament in September 2014. He served as Union Minister of State for the Ministry of Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises from 9 November 2014 to 3 September 2017, and then as Union Minister of State (Independent Charge) for the same ministry until 25 May 2019.
In May 2019, Giriraj Singh was re-elected to the 17th Lok Sabha. He served as Union Cabinet Minister for the Ministry of Fisheries, Animal Husbandry, and Dairying from 30 May 2019 to 7 July 2021. Subsequently, he was appointed as Union Cabinet Minister for the Ministry of Rural Development and the Ministry of Panchayati Raj on 7 July 2021.
In June 2024, he was elected to the 18th Lok Sabha. Following this win, he was inducted into the Modi 3.0 cabinet and appointed as the Minister of Textiles.
Giriraj Singh has a special interest in village development based on agriculture and livestock, solar energy, and animal feed research. He has undertaken research on an animal feed based on 'Moringa Biomass' with the help of scientists at ICAR, Mathura, with a research paper publication and patent application currently under process.
On a personal front, he is married to Uma Sinha and they have one daughter. His net worth is Rs 14,31,69,297.
