Biography

Dr. Harsh Vardhan is an Indian Politician. He belongs to Bhartiya Janta Party.Currently he is the Union Minister for Science & Technology in the Government of India. He represents Chandni Chowk in Delhi as a Member of Parliament in the 16th Lok Sabha. He was given the charge of Union Health Ministry. He was also the Chief Minister of Delhi candidate for the BJP in the 2013 Delhi assembly election. He was first elected in 1993 as member of the Legislative Assembly of Delhi from Krishna Nagar Vidhan Sabha. Dr. Harsh Vardhan was born on 13 December 1954 in Delhi. He has done his schooling from one of the oldest institutions of North India, the Anglo-Sanskrit Victoria Jubilee Senior Secondary School in Daryaganj, Delhi. He did his MBBS and MS in ENT from GSVM Medical College, Kanpur in 1979 and 1983 respectively and returned to Delhi to practice as an ENT surgeon. He got married to Nutan on 26 Feb 1982. They have two sons and a daughter. Dr. Harsh Vardhan has been a Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh activist from his childhood, which gradually saw his greater participation in politics.

    He contested and won the Chandini Chowk Lok Sabha seat by defeating INC candidate Jai Prakash Agarwal by a margin of over two lakh votes.
  • 2014
    He was elected to 16th Lok Sabha from Chandni Chowk. He defeated renowned former TV Journalist Ashutosh of AAm Admi Party.
  • 2013
    Dr. Vardhan was named the Chief Minister candidate of BJP for Delhi Assembly elections. BJP emerged as the single largest party but fell short of an absolute majority so they were unable to form the government.

    He became the state Minister of Education in Government of Delhi. In 1997 as a Health minister Harshvardhan played vital role in Prohibition of Smoking and Non-Smokers Health Protection Act when it was passed in the Delhi assembly. This was one of the first anti-tobacco laws implemented by any state government.
