Dr C P Joshi Biography

Dr. C. P. Joshi (born 29 July 1950) is an Indian politician. He is a member of the Indian National Congress. He is the current Speaker of the Rajasthan Legislative Assembly.

Previously he was the Member of Parliament of India from Bhilwara in the 15th Lok Sabha. He was one of the first 19 members of India's new cabinet sworn in on 22 May 2009, despite being a first-time member of the Lok Sabha. As a union minister, Joshi held key portfolios like Road Transport and Highways, and Rural Development and Panchayati Raj in the Second Manmohan Singh ministry. Moreover, he was also a Cabinet Minister of the Government of Rajasthan from 1998 to 2003.

With a diverse career trajectory, Dr. Joshi began as a lecturer at M. B. College, Udaipur, eventually rising to the position of Professor of Psychology at Mohanlal Sukhadia University in Udaipur.

His political journey commenced in 1973 when he was elected president of the student union at Mohanlal Sukhadia University. Subsequently, at the age of 30, he secured a seat in the state legislative assembly from Nathdwara, marking the onset of his legislative career.

Dr. Joshi's straightforward approach and penchant for logical analysis have defined his political persona. Despite the challenges, he assumed significant roles within the Indian National Congress, including the presidency of the Pradesh Congress Committee, where he notably steered the party to success in state assembly elections.

His contributions extend beyond politics. As the former president of the Rajasthan Cricket Association, Dr. Joshi facilitated the growth of cricket within the state, leading to notable achievements such as consecutive victories in the Ranji Trophy tournament.

Dr. C. P. Joshi was born to Bhudev Prasad Joshi and Sushila Devi Joshi in Rajsamand on July 29, 1950.

Academically, Dr Joshi holds a B.A. in Law from M. B. College, Udaipur, along with postgraduate degrees in Physics and Psychology, culminating in a PhD in Psychology.

On a personal note, Dr. Joshi married Prof (Dr.) Hemlata Joshi on April 28, 1986, and the couple had a son.
