Ajay Maken
Ajay​‍​‌‍​‍‌​‍​‌‍​‍‌ Maken is an Indian politician and a senior leader of the Indian National Congress. He was thrice elected as a Member of Parliament, initially in the Lok Sabha and now in the Rajya Sabha. Besides this, Maken has been a Union minister in the departments of Housing and Urban Poverty Alleviation, Sports and Youth Affairs, and Home Affairs.

He is also the Treasurer for the All India Congress Committee and is on the Congress Working Committee. As of 2025, he also remains active in his roles within the legislature and the ​‍​‌‍​‍‌​‍​‌‍​‍‌party.

Ajay Maken Biography

Ajay​‍​‌‍​‍‌​‍​‌‍​‍‌ Maken was born in New Delhi on 12 January 1964. He studied at St. Xavier’s School, Delhi, and obtained his B.Sc. (Chemistry Hons.) from Hansraj College, University of Delhi. Maken participated in student politics for the first time and became the President of the Delhi University Students’ Union by election. This first involvement with politics was a stepping stone for his public life career which lasted for a long time.

Maken stepped into election politics with the Indian National Congress and was first elected to the Delhi Legislative Assembly from Rajouri Garden in 1993. He got his ticket (and the people's mandate) again in 1998 and 2003 and hence served three consecutive terms. He was very active in politics, and during that time period, he was one of the Delhi government's official members, like Parliamentary Secretary to the Chief Minister, Cabinet Minister for Power, Transport and Tourism and at 39 years of age, he became the youngest Speaker of the Delhi Assembly.

Ajay Maken was the choice of the New Delhi constituency electorate in the 2004 Lok Sabha elections. Competing against a fellow Cabinet Minister, he entered the Parliament and this time he unseated the rival. He again kept the seat in the general elections of 2009, and from then till 2011, he was the Union Minister of State for Home Affairs. After that, he served as Minister of State (Independent Charge) for Youth Affairs and Sports, and later Cabinet Minister for Housing and Urban Poverty Alleviation in the Government of India. He was beaten by a BJP candidate in the New Delhi constituency in the 2014 general election.

He came back to Parliament in 2024 when Maken won as a Member of Parliament to the Rajya Sabha from Karnataka. Maken, apart from being the treasurer of the All India Congress Committee, is also a member of the Congress Working Committee, a very important organisation in the party which takes strategic and organisational decisions.

As of 2025, he is still heavily involved in lawmaking, party leadership, and policy debates at the ​‍​‌‍​‍‌​‍​‌‍​‍‌centre.
