V. Sunil Kumar

Sunil Kumar Vasudev was born on August 15, 1975, in Mudigere, Karnataka. He completed his educational requirements at local schools before obtaining his Bachelor of Arts degree from the Nilaya campus of Kuvempu University. Before active politics, he was involved in social work and local organisational activities, later becoming prominent in regional party work.

Sunil Kumar started his political career from basic political organisations and later joined Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), which enabled him to win the Karkala seat in his first election to the Karnataka Legislative Assembly in 2004. He has maintained his role as a legislator in the constituency through multiple elections, which he won except for his 2008 defeat, but he reclaimed the seat in 2013 and maintained it until now.

He has taken on responsibilities outside his assembly duties through his work as the BJP co-incharge for Kerala, which he started in 2020. In August 2021, he became a member of the Karnataka state cabinet through his appointment as Minister for Energy and Minister for Kannada & Culture under the Basavaraj Bommai government. There, he worked on power management duties while promoting cultural initiatives throughout the state.

Sunil Kumar has expressed his opinions about public policy matters during his time as a legislator. In 2025, he accused the state government of improperly executing the caste census because their methods treated smaller communities unfairly compared to larger groups in backward caste classification. He proposed that Karkala and coastal Karnataka should develop their tourism sector through temple, eco, and beach tourism projects, which he presented at a regional conference.

Sunil Kumar M. K. Vasudev passed away in July 202,5 while local leaders confirmed his status as a community organiser who worked with the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) to mobilise youth throughout the area.
