Umesh‍‌‍‍‌‍‌‍‍‌ Sahani, a native of Bihar's Darbhanga district, started his political career with a focus on the social upliftment of the marginalized and river-based communities. With his modest background, he went on to work his way up by engaging the youth and demanding the political representation of the Nishad (fishermen) community in the state of Bihar.

After that, in 2018, he set up the Vikassheel Insaan Party (VIP) in order to have a separate political platform for the backward and underprivileged classes in Bihar. Sahani took the VIP to the NDA fold for the first time in 2020 when they contested the Assembly elections together, and thus, the presence of VIP in the Bihar polls got solidified. While the political landscape in Bihar has been turbulent with Sahani switching loyalties and alliances, he has managed to stay influential in north Bihar.

In 2025, Sahani is down to the fight again in Darbhanga, and this time, the focus is on social justice, job creation, implementation of welfare schemes designed specifically for workers benefiting the river.
