Padma Shri awared Bijoya Chakravarty started her political career in the Janata Party. But, from 1986 to 1992, she subsequently joined the regional Asom Gana Parishad and served in the Rajya Sabha. She later decided to join the Bhartiya Janata Party, following her stint in the Rajya Sabha. She represented Gauhati in the 13th Lok Sabha. In 1999, she won the seat for the BJP for the first time. She served as the Union Minister of State for Water Resources, under the premiership of Atal Bihari Vajpayee. In 2004, the BJP decided to field singer Bhupen Hazarika in her place, causing widespread protests from BJP party workers. On personal front, she is married to Jiten Chakravarty. The couple has a daughter, Suman Haripriya, who was elected to the Assam Legislative Assembly election in 2016 from Hajo Vidhan Sabha constituency and a son, Ranajit Chakravarty, who died in 2017 at the age of 49.
