Former Jharkhand Chief Minister Shibu Soren passed away at the age of 81 at Delhi's Ganga Ram Hospital, where he had been receiving treatment for a prolonged illness. He is the Ex MP of Dumka in Jharkhand, the position he retained for seven terms. He served as Chief Minister of Jharkhand in 2005 for 10 days and then from 2008 to 2009 and again from 2009 to 2010. He was sworn in as the third Chief Minister of Jharkhand on 30 December 2009, however, he resigned on 30 May 2010 after failing to obtain coalition support from the Bharatiya Janata Party. He is the President of the Jharkhand Mukti Morcha (JMM) political party.

Shibu Soren has been in and out of prison for murder. However, he was tried and acquitted of the charges. In November 2006, Soren was found guilty in a twelve-year-old case involving the kidnapping and murder of his former personal secretary Shashinath Jha. He was acquitted of the charges leveled against him in 2007.

  • 2014 : He was re-elected from Dumka in 16th Lok Sabha where he defeated Sunil Soren of BJP by a margin of 39030 votes.
  • 2005 : He was sworn into the office in 2005, the position he served under for 10 days. He was elected the Minister for Coal in the Union Cabinet in November 2006. He retained the seat in the ensuing 15th Lok Sabha elections in 2009.
