Sanjay Sarawagi was born on 28 August 1969 in Bihar to Permeshwar Sarawagi. He hails from the Vaishya/Marwari community, which has a strong presence in the business sector. His educational background includes M.Com and MBA degrees from Mithila University. Starting his political journey in student activism, he was actively involved with the Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP), the student wing of the BJP. He officially joined the Bharatiya Janata Party in 1995.
Sarawagi's electoral career began at the grassroots level, serving as a ward councillor in the Darbhanga Municipal Corporation in 2003. He first contested and won the Darbhanga Sadar assembly seat in February 2005. He was re-elected in October 2005 and continued his winning streak in 2010, 2015, and 2020, making him a five-time MLA from the constituency. In April 2018, he was appointed as the Chairman of the Prakalan Samiti of the Bihar Legislative Assembly, showcasing his administrative capabilities.
Sanjay Sarawagi took an oath in the Maithili language when he became a minister in the Nitish cabinet. His consistent victories and strong connection with the local populace, particularly the business community in Darbhanga and the Mithila region, have established him as a significant political figure.
In November 2025, Sanjay Saraogi won the Darbhanga seat in Bihar, polling 97,453 votes and finishing ahead of Umesh Sahani by a margin of 24,593 votes, reinforcing his long-standing connection with the people of Darbhanga.
