The Kumbakonam Assembly constituency has historically been regarded as an influential constituency within the Thanjavur region because of its urban-rural voter mix, educational institutions, and political importance in delta politics. Following the 2008 delimitation process, the constituency remained part of the Mayiladuthurai Lok Sabha segment and frequently witnessed direct contests between the DMK alliance and AIADMK alliance. Between 2011 and 2021, the constituency saw changing electoral outcomes, making it one of the closely watched constituencies during the 2026 Assembly election. This political background increased the strategic importance of TVK’s decision to aggressively campaign in the constituency.

During 2024, Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam intensified organisational activities across Tamil Nadu following Vijay’s formal transition into active politics. The party concentrated on building booth-level networks and identifying constituency-level candidates across the delta region, including Thanjavur district. Vinoth emerged during this expansion process and became associated with TVK’s constituency outreach activities in Kumbakonam. His local visibility reportedly increased through participation in public meetings, grassroots mobilisation, and youth-focused campaign activities conducted by the party during 2024 and 2025.

In April 2026, Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam officially announced Vinoth as its candidate from the Kumbakonam Assembly constituency. His candidature became politically notable because the constituency was considered highly competitive and strategically important in the delta region. During the election campaign, TVK focused heavily on youth mobilisation, anti-incumbency narratives, and localised constituency outreach. Vinoth participated in roadshows, voter interaction programmes, and public meetings as part of TVK’s statewide campaign led by Vijay. Political observers increasingly viewed Kumbakonam as one of the constituencies where TVK had become electorally competitive despite being a first-time Assembly contestant.

During the final phase of campaigning in 2026, Kumbakonam witnessed intense multi-cornered electoral competition involving TVK, DMK alliance parties, and AIADMK alliance candidates. Regional political discussions and election observers noted that TVK’s campaign in the constituency had succeeded in mobilising younger voters and sections of first-time voters in urban and semi-urban areas. Vinoth’s campaign was also associated with extensive booth-level coordination and local constituency outreach under TVK’s expanding delta-region strategy.

On 4 May 2026, Vinoth won the Kumbakonam Assembly constituency as the Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam candidate by securing 78,650 votes. He won the constituency by a narrow margin of 679 votes, making it one of the closest contests of the 2026 Tamil Nadu Assembly election. His victory was considered politically significant because it marked TVK’s breakthrough in the Cauvery delta region, an area traditionally dominated by established Dravidian parties. The result also strengthened TVK’s emerging electoral footprint in central Tamil Nadu during its maiden Assembly election.
