Kamalakhya Dey Purkayastha

Kamalakhya Dey Purkayastha was born in Assam and entered public life through student and youth political activities. His early political involvement developed in the Barak Valley region, where he became associated with grassroots mobilisation and organisational responsibilities within the Indian National Congress.

He entered electoral politics in the late 1990s and was elected to the Assam Legislative Assembly from Karimganj South. His initial legislative tenure focused on constituency representation and participation in Assembly debates related to local development and public administration.

During Congress-led governments in Assam, Purkayastha served as a Cabinet Minister, holding portfolios including Finance, Education, and Border Affairs. His ministerial responsibilities expanded his role from legislative representation to executive governance and policy implementation at the state level.

Following the change of government in 2016, he continued his political career from the opposition benches, remaining active in legislative debates and party coordination.

As of 2026, Kamalakhya Dey Purkayastha continues to serve as an elected MLA from Karimganj South and remains engaged in Assam’s legislative and political affairs.
