George Kurian, currently serving as the Vice President of the Bharatiya Janta Party (BJP) Kerala unit, began his career as a lawyer, practising for a period in the esteemed chambers of the Supreme Court. Hailing from the Syro-Malabar Catholic Church, one of Kerala’s prominent Christian denominations.
His ideological alignment with the Sangh Parivar in Kerala’s Christian community, even when it was not widely embraced by the BJP, underscored his commitment to his beliefs. Kurian’s journey into politics started with his early affiliation with the BJP since its inception in 1980.
Over the years, Kurian held pivotal roles within the party, including State General Secretary and National Secretary of the Bharatiya Yuva Morcha. His leadership within the state BJP, coupled with his role as the party’s spokesperson and membership in the national executive, marked his ascent within the political sphere. Kurian frequently appeared on television debates and gained recognition for translating speeches by leaders like Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Amit Shah during their public engagements in Kerala. In a surprising turn of events in 2024, Kurian entered the Union Council of Ministers under PM Modi. He was appointed as the Minister of State in the Ministry of Minority Affairs and the Ministry of Fisheries, Animal Husbandry, and Dairying, further solidifying his role in shaping national policies.
Beyond his party duties, Kurian served as the Vice-Chairperson of the National Commission for Minorities, advocating for minority rights.
