Dr P Saravanan embarked on his political journey as the Madurai Rural Unit Secretary of the Marumalarchi Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (MDMK). However, due to the denial of a ticket to contest elections by MDMK, he transitioned to the DMK. Before this, in 2015, he was affiliated with the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP).
Within the DMK, he assumed the role of Deputy Leader of the party's Doctor wing. Notably, during the bye-elections for the Tamil Nadu Legislative Assembly on May 19, he clinched victory over his opponent Muniyandi of the AIADMK with a substantial margin of 2936 votes.
Disenchanted by the DMK's decision to withhold a candidacy for him, Saravanan switched allegiance once again, this time rejoining the BJP on March 14, 2021. Swiftly, upon his return, he was nominated for the Madurai North constituency, inciting dissent among some BJP members who protested the decision, citing it as unsuitable due to his previous party affiliations.
However, tensions within the BJP soon arose when Saravanan publicly expressed discontent with the party's ideology, particularly criticising what he deemed as "politics of hatred and religion," and accusing the party of working against minority communities. This led to his expulsion from the BJP by state president Kuppusamy Annamalai.
Born in 1969 to a government employee father named Pandiyan and a homemaker mother, Saravanan has not only pursued a career in politics but also established the "Saravana Multispeciality Hospital Pvt. Ltd." and "Surya Trust" to aid underprivileged individuals and children with congenital heart conditions. He also retains his position as Deputy Leader of the DMK Party’s Doctor wing, continuing his dedication to public service.
