K.P. Munusamy was born in Kaveripattinam, Krishnagiri district, Tamil Nadu, on the 7th of June 1952. He was educated at the Government. Arts College, Krishnagiri and later acquired a law degree. He joined politics in 1972, by becoming a member of AIADMK and by engaging in activities of the youth and the district-level party, he made his way up.
He was successful for the first time in his bid for an election in 1991 as MLA from the Kaveripattinam constituency. Afterwards, in 1998, he moved to national politics and got elected as a Member of Parliament from Krishnagiri. Over time, he came back to state politics and has been winning Assembly elections from different constituencies, including Krishnagiri and subsequently Veppanahalli, consecutively.
During 2011- 2014, he assumed the office of Minister for Municipal Administration and Rural Development in the Tamil Nadu state government led by Jayalalithaa. In this capacity, he has spearheaded the implementation of rural development programs, municipal reforms, and urban-rural infrastructure development. He also held the top positions in the party.
Since 2017, he has been Deputy Co-ordinator, and from 2022, he has been the Deputy General Secretary of AIADMK. Veppanahalli continues to be his constituency from where he is still the MLA as of 2025, and he is also part of the party leadership in western Tamil Nadu that is making decisions.
