Ashok Gehlot came into this world on 3 May 1951 in Jodhpur. Being the son of the soil, he was raised following the ideals of Gandhi. He was a very active participant in the student movements, social service activities and public welfare programmes during his studies. He holds a degree in Science, Law, and later he attained his Master’s in Economics. The social environment he was brought up in and his involvement in social work hugely influenced his later commitment towards inclusive governance and became the stepping stones of his political journey, which lasted for a long time.
Gehlot took his first step in national politics at a very young age. Later on, he was trusted by the senior Congress leadership, and thus he climbed his way up to power. He has had a lot of ministerial roles in the Union government throughout his career, which include the portfolios such as Tourism, Civil Aviation, Textiles and others. His style of leadership, which was quiet yet effective, and his management skills earned him a place among a small group of leaders from Rajasthan with vast experience at both the state and the central level.
The Chief Minister of Rajasthan, in his three terms from 1998 to 2003, 2008 to 2013, and lastly from 2018 to 2023, Gehlot’s time in office witnessed a plethora of welfare schemes, public health initiatives, social security programmes, and a governance system which was focused on stability and continuity. Apart from being the Chief Minister, Gehlot was also in charge of significant departments, namely Finance, Taxation, Home & Justice, Cabinet Secretariat, NRI Affairs, IT & Communication, DIPR and State Investigation Bureau, his range of administrative experience being reflected in this.
Gehlot, the MLA from Sardarpura, has for a very long time been able to sustain a strong electoral base in his constituency, and thus he has continuously been victorious with high margins. His long tenure, which is the result of organisational discipline and an intimate knowledge of the political fabric of Rajasthan, has made him one of the most stable and powerful leaders in the recent political history of the state.
