Aryadan Muhammad is a prominent Congress leader from Malabar.He has won the Nilambur Assembly constituency eight times. He was the Minister of Labor and Forests in the EK Nayanar Cabinet from 1980-82.He was also the Minister of Labor and Tourism in the AK Antony cabinet and the Minister for Electricity in Oomman Chandy Cabinet.
Born in 1935 to Unneen and Kadiamunni, Aryadan Mohammad entered active politics through trade union activities.He joined the Congress in 1952 and has been a member of the KPCC since 1958.He has also held the posts of DCC President and KPCC General Secretary for Kozhikode and Malappuram districts. He was also in charge of various trade unions of INTUC. In 1977, Aryadan Muhammad won the first assembly seat from Nilambur. He continued his success in 1980, 1987, 1991, 1996, 2001, 2006 and 2011.
Aryadan Mohammad was a prominent leader who was with the Left Front when AK Antony left the party in 1978 to form a group in the Congress Party (A) after the resignation of the Chief Minister Position. It was an aftermath of decision of the congress highcommand to declare support for Indira Gandhi, who contested in Chikmagalur, Karnataka, following her defeat in the post-emergency Lok Sabha elections.
Aryadan Mohammad entered the Assembly after defeating Congress' MR Chandran in the 1980 elections and became a member of the Nayanar cabinet.
Later in 1981, when AK Antony withdrew his support for the Nayanar cabinet and returned to the Congress, Aryadan also returned with Antony.
Aryadan is alleged to have played a key role in the murder of Nilambur MLA and CPM leader K Kunhali.
It is alleged that leaders including Indira Gandhi intervened to save Aryadan Mohammad from the murder case.
Aryadan Mohammad, the first accused in the case, was acquitted by the court after the prosecution failed to prove his involvement in the case.
