Anbumani Ramadoss Biography

Born on 9 October 1968, in Puducherry, Anbumani Ramadoss is the son of Dr. S. Ramadoss, the founder of the Pattali Makkal Katchi (PMK). He completed his SSLC from Montfort Boys Higher Secondary School, Yercaud in 1984, and his higher secondary education from St. Ann's Higher Secondary School, Tindivanam in 1986. He pursued his medical degree, an MBBS, from Madras Medical College. After his graduation, he served as a medical practitioner for about one and a half years in Nallalam, a village near Tindivanam. In 2003, he furthered his education by undertaking a course on macro-economics at the London School of Economics. Anbumani Ramadoss formally entered politics through the Pattali Makkal Katchi, where he served as the youth wing president. His political career saw a significant rise in 2004 when he was elected to the Rajya Sabha and subsequently appointed as the Union Minister of Health and Family Welfare in the UPA government, becoming one of the youngest cabinet ministers at the age of 35. During his tenure as Health Minister (2004-2009), he initiated several groundbreaking public health reforms, including the establishment of the National Rural Health Mission (NRHM) in 2005, stringent regulations against tobacco products, and the introduction of the 108 emergency ambulance service. He also played a role in setting up institutions like the Public Health Foundation of India and the Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI). In 2014, Anbumani Ramadoss was elected as a Member of Parliament to the 16th Lok Sabha from the Dharmapuri constituency. He contested the 2016 Tamil Nadu Legislative Assembly election from the Pennagaram constituency but was defeated. In 2019, he again contested and lost the Lok Sabha elections from Dharmapuri. Despite electoral setbacks, he remained active in public life and the PMK. In May 2022, he was elevated to the position of President of the Pattali Makkal Katchi. Anbumani Ramadoss is also known for leading the environmental NGO 'Pasumai Thaayagam' and advocating for causes such as water management, environmental protection, and prohibition.
