Son of former Prime Minister Charan Singh, Ajit Singh is the founder and Chief of Rashtriya Lok Dal. He previously presided as, President of Lok Dal (A) and Janata Party during 1987 and 1988. He served as the Member of Parliament from Bhagpat constituency for seven terms. He was first inducted as a Cabinet Minister in 1989. He subsequently served as Cabinet Minister in 1995, 2001 and 2011. He remained a Lok Sabha MP until 2014.
Onset of the emergence of Narendra Modi and BJP on national sphere, Ch. Ajit Singh started loosing his grip over Baghpat voters. He lost 2014 general election from Baghpat to Dr. Satpal Singh, ex IPS and a BJP candidate. In 2019, he shifted his constituency from Baghpat to Muzaffar Nagar but he lost to Sanjeev Balyan of BJP.

Ch. Ajit Singh had extended his support to the prolonged farmers hesitation against the Farm Bills 2020. Ch. Ajit Singh tested positive for COVID-19 as the second wave of the deadly pandemic hit India in early 2021. He was battling for his life in a private hospital of Gurugram. He succumbed to Coronavirus and breathed his last on 6 May 2021.
