T. Velmurugan is an Indian politician and the founder of the Tamizhaga Vazhvurimai Katchi (TVK).
He was born in 1970 at Puliyur, Tamil Nadu, and he decided to travel his political path with the Pattali Makkal Katchi (PMK). He was elected a Member of the Legislative Assembly (MLA) from Panruti in both 2001 and 2006. Subsequently, in 2012, he set up TVK to attain his goals.
In 2021, he contested in the Tamil Nadu Legislative Assembly elections from Panruti, where he ran under the DMK's symbol. He won the election with 47.6% of the total votes. Sathya Panneerselvam of the AIADMK was his opponent, whom he defeated. He is a person of great influence in Tamil Nadu politics who is known to speak in favor of Tamil identity as well as rights.
Velmurugan had clashes in the Tamil Nadu Assembly in March 2025, when he had a confrontation with the opposition as well as the treasury benches. He made the charge against the previous AIADMK Administration that it was incompetent to guarantee reservation in government jobs for those who studied in the Tamil medium. AIADMK MLAs objected to what he said, and as a result, these two speeches were removed alongside the ones in which they were spoken.
As a backlash to the incident, Velmurugan was condemned for making lewd comments about the female students who went to the education award gala organized by actor-turned-politician Vijay in June 2025. He is said to have called the parents of girls "fools" because they let their daughters embrace Vijay during the ceremony, a comment that attracted criticism as being "insensitive to culture and politically misguided".
As of 2026, he remains an active legislator in the Tamil Nadu Assembly and continues to work on constituency and alliance priorities.
