V. Gopalsamy is from Tamilnadu. V. Gopalsamy, also known as Vaiko. He is the founder and General Secretary of the Marumalarchi Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (MDMK), a political party active mainly in the Indian state of Tamil Nadu. He was born in Kallingappatti, Tirunelveli district in Tamil Nadu in 1944. His origin is from the Telugu speaking Kamma (Naidu) community of Andhra Pradesh. He graduated with a Gold Medal in his Bachelor of arts degree in economics from St. Xavier's College, Palayamkottai and masters from Presidency College, Chennai. He has done his bachelor's degree in law from Madras Law College. He is an avid reader and orator known for his oratory skills both in Tamil and English. He married to Renuka Devi on 14 June 1971. He has two daughters and a son. Vaiko enjoys writing in his free time and has authored over 50 books apart from regular essays and columns in newspapers.

  • In 2016 Tamil Nadu state assembly elections, Vaiko contested from Kovilpatti seat. He fielded 29 MDMK candidates. None of them won.
2014
  • Again he contested from Virudhnagar Loksabha constituency and lost. He was defeated by Radhakrishnan T of AIADMK.
2009
  • He contested Loksabha Election from Virudhunagar. He was defeated by Manicka Tagore of INC.
2008
  • Tamil Nadu CID police arrested him on charges of sedition. The charges stemmed from speeches Vaiko made at a party meeting. He gave remarks on the Sri Lankan issue and the government's raids into LTTE-held areas. After 14 days in judicial custody, he was released.
2005
  • Vaiko started the Marumalarchi Blood Donors' Club. Vaiko has undergone a month-long padayatra in Tamil Nadu demanding for the interlinking of inter-state rivers in India.

  • During Loksabha elections, Vaiko extensively campaigned for MDMK. He traveled throughout the state for 55 days without a break.
