Tirath Singh Rawat Biography

Tirath Singh Rawat is an Indian politician from Bharatiya Janta Party. He was born and brought up in a small village named Seeron in Pauri Garhwal district of the Himalayalan state, Uttarakhand. He received his M.A in sociology from HNB Garhwal University, Srinagar, Uttarakhand.

With an interest in social service, Mr. Rawat was active in Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad and entered in full time politics by student movements. He has been associated with the Rastriya Swayamsevak Sangh, and worked as pracharak. He is an early member of Bharatiya Janta Party and was jailed for 2 months for his participation in Ram Mandir Aandolan. Though he started his legislative career as a member of Uttar Pradesh Legislative Council, he was also involved in the struggle for separate Uttarakhand state.
And when this Himalayan region got the statehood, Tirath Singh Rawat became education minister in its first government. He has also served the Bharatiya Janta Party as the president of Uttarkhand state unit and national general secretary.

He was elected Member of Parliament in 2019 general election from Garhwal Lok Sabha constituency and was appointed as members in various parliamentary committees. On 10 March 2021, he was sworn in as the Chief Minister of Uttarakhand.

In a surprise move, Tirath Singh Rawat resigned as the Chief Minister of the hill state within 4 months due to statutory constraint. Rawat was a Member of Parliament when he was sworn in as Uttarakhand CM. To remain in office he needs to be elected to the state legislative house. Though there were Haldwani and Gangotri constituencies to go into bye-election, however, it is much unlikely as the term of the state legislative assembly ending early next year.
