M. Thambidurai was born on 15 March 1947 in Karur district, Tamil Nadu. He pursued higher education in economics and law, completing a Master’s degree in Economics and later obtaining a Bachelor of Laws (BL) degree before entering public life.

He entered politics through the All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam, founded by M. G. Ramachandran. His early political career involved organisational roles within the party and engagement with public issues in Tamil Nadu, which eventually led to his participation in national parliamentary elections.

Thambidurai was first elected to the Lok Sabha in 1985 from the Krishnagiri Lok Sabha constituency in a by-election. During the late 1980s and 1990s, he held ministerial responsibilities in the Union government, including serving as Minister of State for Surface Transport and later Minister of State for Law, Justice, and Company Affairs.

Over the following decades, he remained an influential figure within the AIADMK and continued to contest parliamentary elections from different constituencies in Tamil Nadu. He later represented the Karur Lok Sabha constituency, strengthening his political base in the region.

M Thambidurai became an MLA from Erode in 1977, and was first elected as a Member of Parliament to the 8th Lok Sabha in 1984 from Karur (Lok Sabha constituency), Dharmapuri and was subsequently elected to the 9th Lok Sabha, 12th Lok Sabha, 15th Lok Sabha and 16th Lok Sabha.
