A retired associate professor, Rohit Sharma was elected MLA from Kurseong assembly constituency in West Bengal. In 2016, he contested and won the assembly elections with a GOJAM candidature and defeated AITC candidate Shanta Chhetri by a margin of over 33,000 votes. He was also elected into 15th assembly elections from Kurseong in 2011. He won his first assembly election in 2011 by an extremely huge margin of 93000 votes.
