Manish Tewari Biography

Manish Tewari was born on December 8, 1965, in Chandigarh to Dr. Vishwanath Tewari and Dr. Amrit Kaur. A lawyer by profession, he has practised at the Supreme Court of India. Tewari is a member of the Indian National Congress and currently represents Anandpur Sahib in the 17th Lok Sabha.

From his student days, Tewari was actively involved in politics. He began his political career with the National Students' Union of India (NSUI) and later joined the national committee of the Indian National Congress.

In 2009, he was first elected to the Lok Sabha after defeating Gurcharan Singh of Akali Dal, serving as the Member of Parliament for Ludhiana from 2009 to 2014. During this period, he also served as the Union Minister of State (Independent Charge) for Information and Broadcasting from 2009 to 2014 in the UPA government.

Due to illness, he did not contest the 2014 Lok Sabha elections. However, he made a comeback in national politics by winning the 2019 Lok Sabha elections from the Anandpur Sahib seat, securing his second term in the lower house of the Indian Parliament.

Tewari provides pro bono legal assistance to the poor and enjoys watching historical and period movies. He is an avid reader, particularly interested in world history, military history, international affairs, strategic studies, and comics. An active swimmer and runner, he captained the Chandigarh and Punjab University teams in various National and Inter-Varsity Swimming and Water Polo Championships.

On a personal note, he married Naaznin B. Shafa, and they have one daughter. His net worth is Rs 29,68,42,688.
