M. H. Jawahirullah

Dr. M. H. Jawahirullah is well known to be an Indian politician, an educator, and a social activist. Mainly, he is the founder of Manithaneya Makkal Katchi (MMK), a political party in Tamil Nadu that focuses on social justice and minority rights. He was born in 1959 in Udangudi, Thoothukudi district. He has a doctorate degree in Islamic Studies and a Master's degree in Business Administration. His academic background and community activism have deeply influenced his political journey and his role as a people's representative of the state's deprived communities.

Dr. Jawahir started his political career by involving himself in social and community issues. He was mainly an advocate of the welfare of the Muslim minority in Tamil Nadu. He had been very active in the works of disaster relief, education of children, and the promotion of communal harmony. In addition to these activities, he has been at the forefront of issues concerning social justice, such as demanding minority reservations in government jobs and education.

Jawahirullah was a member of the Tamil Nadu Legislative Assembly from the Ramanathapuram constituency during the period 2011-2016. In the 2021 elections, he won from the Papanasam constituency as a candidate of the DMK-led alliance. MMK has made several strategic alliances with major parties in the state under his guidance, thus consolidating its political relevance without giving up its core theme of minority rights and equality.

He was, however, entangled in some problems in his career in recent years. The Madras High Court in 2025 maintained the sentence in a case where he was accused of collecting foreign funds without the proper government authorization. He was handed down a prison term of one year. Still, he is a very committed person in Tamil Nadu politics and the chief proponent of social justice and minority welfare.
