Dr. Kirit Somaiya Biography

A Chartered Accountant by profession, Kirit Somaiya forayed into politics during the student activists movement in 1975. Somaiya took part in the Jayaprakash Narayan movement and later joined the BJP. He was elected the MLA from Mulund in 1991 where he introduced significant Acts in the Maharashtra Assembly. Later he was elected to serve in the Parliament from Mumbai-North-East in 1999 and is serving his second term in the 16th Lok Sabha from the same constituency.

Kirit Somaiya Passed Chartered Account Exam, as a rank holder in all India merit list of first 50 in India. He did his Doctorate in Small Industries Protection, Finance from Mumbai University. As the MLA of Mulund Somaiya passed two pertinent Acts in the Maharashtra assembly - - Small Investors. Protection Act of Maharashtra, Repealing Coroners Court (Post Mortem) Act and introduced the Housing Society Conveyance Bill.

• 2016 : 1Sep. 2016: He became the Chairperson of Standing Committee on Labour. On 23 Sep. 2016 he was appointed as the member of Sub-Committee-VII (PPP Project) of Public Accounts Committee (2016-17).
• 2015 : 29 Jan 2015: He became a Member of General Purposes Committee.
• 2014 : 1 Sep. 2014 onwards: Member of- Public Accounts Committee; Standing Committee on Finance; Committee on Privileges; Consultative Committee, Ministry of Urban Development.
• 2014 : After two consecutive losses in the parliament elections, Somaiya retained his seat in Mumbai-North-East by defeating Sanjay Dina Patil of NCP. Soon he became a Chairperson of House Committee (12 June to 27 Nov. 2014).

He later joined the BJP and worked himself up the BJP's totem pole. Later he became a Vice President of B.J.P., Maharashtra.
