A Chartered Accountant by profession, Kirit Somaiya forayed into politics during the student activists movement in 1975. Somaiya took part in the Jayaprakash Narayan movement and later joined the BJP. He was elected the MLA from Mulund in 1991 where he introduced significant Acts in the Maharashtra Assembly. Later he was elected to serve in the Parliament from Mumbai-North-East in 1999 and is serving his second term in the 16th Lok Sabha from the same constituency.
