G. K. VASAN

G. K. Vasan was born on the 28th day of December, in the year 1964, in Sundara Perumalkoil, the state of Tamil Nadu. He hails from a family that had a great deal of political power; his father, G. K. Moopanar, the chief Congress leader, was one of the foremost ones. Vasan was educated at The New College, Madras University, and then he went into politics.

He was a political novice at the start of his career, but soon became the most influential person by supporting his father in the Tamil Maanila Congress (Moopanar) and later accepting the leadership mantle after the death of Moopanar. In the year 2001, Vasan was chosen as President of the TMC (Moopanar). The next year, the party was merged with the Indian National Congress, thus Vasan found himself part of the national party.

Vasan was elected in the year 2002 to the Rajya Sabha, which is the upper house of India’s Parliament, representing the state of Tamil Nadu. He spent a decade in the Rajya Sabha (2002-2014) in various roles, from serving in committees to taking up positions in the Union government as Minister of State (Independent Charge) for the Ministry of Statistics & Programme Implementation (2006-2009) and Union Minister of Shipping (2009-2014).

Vasan had allied with the Indian National Congress (2002-2014), and then he brought back the Tamil Maanila Congress (Moopanar) in the year 2014, and has been functioning as its President since 3rd November 2014. His engagement has not only focused on strengthening the party’s position in Tamil Nadu politics but also on clearing the party’s position in the Tamil Nadu political landscape.

G. K. Vasan is still holding the post of President of the Tamil Maanila Congress (Moopanar) in 2026, and he is actively participating in the politics of both regional and alliances in Tamil Nadu.
