Dr. Govind Singh

Dr. Govind Singh was born on July 1st, 1951, in Vaishpura, Madhya Bharat (which is presently in Madhya Pradesh). The degree of B.A.M.S. is borne by him from the Government Ayurvedic College of Jabalpur University. He started his political career in the early 1990s and became a prominent person in the INC in the Gwalior-Bhind area.

The first time he got elected to the Madhya Pradesh Legislative Assembly was from the Lahar constituency in the year 1990. He was first elected on a Janata Dal ticket but later turned towards the Indian National Congress, and that happened in the year 1993. His political position was thereafter made unshakeable with the incoming of successive victories.

During his long career, Dr. Govind Singh had a chance to take up leadership roles. His ministerial portfolios in Madhya Pradesh included Parliamentary Affairs and Cooperatives, and he was in the Kamal Nath ministry (2018 – 2020).

After Kamal Nath stepped down as the Leader of the Opposition in 2022, Dr. Singh was named as the corresponding opposition leader in the Madhya Pradesh Assembly, where he held this position until late 2023.

In the Madhya Pradesh Assembly election of 2023, Singh faced defeat in his long-held Lahar constituency, thereby putting an end to a remarkable streak of seven consecutive wins. He then declared that he wouldn’t contest in future legislative elections. In 2026, he is still a respected senior INC leader but no longer an MLA.
