Sebastian Simon Aka Seeman Biography

Sebastian Simon, known as Seeman, is the leader of the Naam Tamilar Katchi, a party deeply rooted in Tamil nationalism. Before venturing into politics, he was a filmmaker.

He took up film direction as a career after being inspired by the films of his mentor, Bharathi Raja, and the work of Manivannan. Seeman started his film career by directing Panchalankurichi and directed three more films that did not work well. He returned with a superhit film titled Thambi. Madhavan starred as the lead and released in 2006.

His political journey began in earnest in 2009 when he vocally criticised the Congress party for its alleged role in the conflict in Sri Lanka, asserting that it contributed to the suffering of Tamils. Seeman's rhetoric has often been fiery, expressing staunch support for the LTTE and its leader V. Prabhakaran. This has led to multiple legal challenges against him, including charges of sedition, and he has been detained under the National Security Act (NSA) as well.

Seeman's political activities have been diverse. After initially backing the AIADMK in 2011, he took a stand against Congress in the 2014 elections. His party, Naam Tamilar Katchi, made a significant move in the 2016 assembly elections by competing in all 234 constituencies, showcasing the party's capacity for organic growth and its increasing influence in Tamil Nadu politics.

NTK went for the Lok Sabha elections in 2019 and got more than 1.6 million votes, but did not win any seats. In 2021, the party raised its vote share to 6.89% and in 2024, it went up to 8.19%, marking steady growth. Seeman had to deal with a lot of controversies during this time, including legal issues and gag orders, but he was always Tamil rights, women's representation, and environmental protection, which contributed to the political relevance of NTK and also to the support base in the state's political landscape.
