M. Murali Biography

M. Murali was a veteran political leader from Kerala and a long-time member of the Indian National Congress, best known for his association with the Mavelikkara Assembly constituency. His political journey began through student activism, where he emerged as an active leader within the Kerala Students Union (KSU). During this early phase, he built a reputation as a committed organiser and mobiliser, gaining visibility within the Congress ecosystem through sustained grassroots engagement.

Murali came into wider political focus in 1982, when he led the Secretariat March of Youth from Kannur to Thiruvananthapuram. The march, organised to highlight youth-related demands and democratic concerns, significantly elevated his profile within the Youth Congress and the state Congress leadership. Around the same period, he played a key role in organising major political mobilisations, including the Youth Congress Padayathra from Kaliyilkkavila to Valayar, which traversed the length of Kerala and drew statewide attention.

He was also one of the organisers of the historic Kerala March from Kasaragod to Thiruvananthapuram, an extensive political mobilisation aimed at strengthening organisational unity and highlighting statewide issues. These long-distance marches and padayathras established Murali as a leader capable of large-scale coordination, endurance-based political mobilisation, and cadre engagement across districts. His work during this phase firmly positioned him as a prominent Youth Congress organiser in Kerala.

Following his student and youth political activities, Murali transitioned into mainstream electoral politics through the Youth Congress and Congress party organisation. He held various organisational roles at the district and state levels, particularly in Alappuzha district, and was known for his disciplined approach to party work and election management. His consistent organisational contributions earned him trust within the Congress leadership and prepared him for legislative responsibilities.

Murali entered the Kerala Legislative Assembly for the first time in 1991, winning the Mavelikkara Assembly constituency as a Congress candidate. He went on to represent the constituency three times, establishing himself as a familiar and accessible legislator. As an MLA, he focused primarily on constituency development, public grievance redressal, and legislative participation, rather than ministerial ambition.

Even after completing his legislative tenures, Murali remained actively involved in Congress organisational activities. He participated in election campaigns, mentored younger leaders, and continued to be a visible presence in party programs. In his later years, he was regarded as a senior Congress leader and organisational veteran in central Kerala.

M. Murali passed away on 5 February 2026 in Thiruvananthapuram, concluding a political career that spanned student movements, mass political mobilisations, legislative service, and decades of association with the Indian National Congress.
