The Param Vir Chakra or PVC is India's highest military decoration, which is given for displaying distinguished acts of valor during war.
The Param Vir Chakra is also called as the "Wheel of the Ultimate Brave", and which is conferred for "most conspicuous bravery in the presence of the enemy".
The PVC has been awarded 21 times and Major Somnath Sharma was the first recipient. He was honored on 3 November 1947.
However, some Indian State Government as well as ministries of the central government provide allowances and rewards to recipients of the PVC or the family in case of the recipient is death.

Somnath Sharma, who fought in the Indo-Pakistani War of 1947-1948, was killed on duty during Pakistani infiltrators near Srinagar Airport. For his bravery and sacrifice during the Battle of Badgam, he has been awarded the Param Vir Chakra.
Honorary Captain Yogendra Singh Yadav received the prestigious Param Vir Chakra award. He is regarded as the youngest Param Vir Chakra winner for his actions during the 1999 Kargil conflict.
