Wall Street Protests comes to Mumbai; more agitation planned
Organized by students, youth and women organisations affiliated to Communist Party of India (Marxist), it remains to be seen if the movement will have takers in an economy that is already riddled by inflation and fuel price rise.
Shailendra Kamble, state secretary, Democratic Youth Federation of India (DYFI) has been quoted as saying, "Our effort was to extend solidarity to the protesters who are demonstrating against the harmful economic policies all over the world. Uncontrolled economic liberalisation and accumulation of money to a few private players has harmed nations. The same thing is happening in India and if measures are not taken at the right time, then the day is not far when we also will suffer an economic crisis."
The demonstration was attended by organisations like Students Federation of India (SFI) and All India Democratic Womens" Association (AIDWA).
Avinash Salvi, secretary, Mumbai district, SFI stated on the movement in Mumbai, "We are not copying the movement, but what is happening in India, currently, is nothing different than what has happened there in the West. They are experiencing the harmful effects of neo-liberal policies. Here, the employment rate is decreasing, education is getting costlier and inflation is at all-time high. There is no reason why Indians should not join the protest."
There were also plans to expand the agitations to other parts of the country, revealed Kamble.
