Maharashtra's MVA Alliance Faces Early Turmoil Ahead of Elections

In Maharashtra, the alliance of opposition parties, known as the Maha Vikas Aghadi (MVA), is facing internal conflicts even before the election season has begun. The Shiv Sena UBT faction has independently announced a list of 17 candidates, causing friction within the alliance. The Congress party has expressed its dissatisfaction openly, stating it will reconsider its decisions in light of these developments. Meanwhile, Prakash Ambedkar's Vanchit Bahujan Aghadi (VBA) has chosen to go its own way, further complicating the situation.

Reports suggest that there is significant unrest within the Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) led by Sharad Pawar due to the unilateral actions of Uddhav Thackeray's Shiv Sena UBT. Sharad Pawar himself is reportedly unhappy with the current state of affairs, having hoped for a more collaborative approach to seat distribution. The Congress party is particularly upset with Thackeray's faction, not just for announcing candidates for 22 seats without consultation but also for the specific candidates chosen for 17 of those seats.

MVA Alliance in Pre-Election Turmoil

Former Mumbai Congress President Sanjay Nirupam has voiced his anger loudly, especially targeting Amol Kirtikar of Sena UBT over the Mumbai North West seat, labeling him a 'Khichdi Chor' and criticizing the choice of a candidate involved in a scam during the COVID pandemic. Nirupam has issued a week's ultimatum to his party's leadership, threatening to explore other options and advising a break from the alliance with Sena UBT.

Despite these tensions, Shiv Sena UBT appears unmoved. MP Arvind Sawant from the party dismissed Nirupam's criticisms by questioning his significance and emphasizing discipline within Shiv Sena UBT. On the other hand, Congress Legislature Party leader Balasaheb Thorat has called for Shiv Sena UBT to rethink their decisions, highlighting the discord over candidate selection for seats in Bhiwandi, Sangli, and Mumbai South Central. Thorat deems it unfortunate that the coalition's principles have not been adhered to.

Adding to the complexity, Prakash Ambedkar's VBA has announced its candidates for eight seats and accused MVA allies of promoting nepotism. Ambedkar himself plans to contest from Akola. This move by VBA underscores the fragmented state of opposition alliances in Maharashtra.

Maharashtra, with its 48 Lok Sabha seats, is a crucial battleground where the MVA aims to challenge the ruling NDA alliance's dominance. The NDA is setting its sights on winning more than 45 seats. However, internal disputes over seat distribution among MVA members are causing significant disruptions, threatening the stability and unity of the opposition alliance even before the election campaign has officially kicked off.
