Mumbai Metro Line 3 Phase 1 To Open Soon, Easing Airport Access And Commutes

Great news for Mumbai commuters! The first phase of the much-anticipated Mumbai Metro Line 3 is nearing completion, offering a faster and more convenient way to reach Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport (CSMIA).

This initial 12-kilometer stretch, running from Aarey to Bandra Kurla Complex (BKC), is expected to be operational by the end of April 2024. Once open, it will not only connect passengers to both airport terminals but also provide a crucial link to Metro Line 1 (Versova-Andheri-Ghatkopar) at Marol.

Travel times are set to see a significant reduction. The trip from Cuffe Parade to Aarey, which currently takes nearly two hours by road, will be completed in just one hour via Metro.

The Mumbai Metro Rail Corporation Limited (MMRCL) has already begun trial runs for Phase 1. Passenger services will commence upon receiving final approval from the Commissioner of Metro Railway Safety (CMRS).

Upon full completion, Metro Line 3 aims to serve a massive 1.7 million passengers daily. Trains will run frequently, with a gap of three to four minutes, and can accommodate around 2,500 passengers per trip.

As Mumbai's first fully underground metro line, this project promises a major improvement to the city's transportation network.

The benefits extend beyond faster commutes. The metro line will provide easy access to six major business hubs, including Nariman Point, Cuffe Parade, Fort, Lower Parel, BKC, and SEEPZ/MIDC. Additionally, it will connect over 30 educational institutions, 13 hospitals, 14 religious sites, and more than 30 recreational facilities. Notably, it will bring much-needed metro connectivity to areas like Kalbadevi, Girgaon, and Worli, which are currently underserved by suburban rail.

Moreover, integrating Metro Line 3 with other Mumbai Metro lines, the Monorail, Suburban Rail, and ST Bus services is expected to reduce congestion on suburban railways by an estimated 15 percent. This will offer commuters a wider range of efficient and reliable travel options throughout the city.
