Suvendu Adhikari is serving as the current Chief Minister of West Bengal after taking office in May 2026, following the state assembly elections. He became the first leader from the Bharatiya Janata Party to hold the Chief Minister’s post in West Bengal. Before this political shift, Mamata Banerjee had served as the Chief Minister from 2011 to 2026 and was the first woman to hold the position in the state. She also founded the All India Trinamool Congress in 1998 and served as its first chairperson.
