Serbia's University Students March Towards Rally, Welcomed by Local Supporters

University students in Serbia, protesting against corruption, received a warm welcome as they marched towards a central town for a significant rally. Residents of Luznice village set up stalls with homemade treats and refreshments to greet the students. "We are here to support all young people, our friends," said Ivan Karic. "We want changes. That's it. We don't want lies anymore."

Students March in Serbia for Rally Against Corruption

The students have been leading large-scale protests following a tragic incident in Novi Sad in November, where a concrete canopy collapse at a train station resulted in 15 deaths. Many Serbians attribute this disaster to government corruption during the station's renovation. Since November 1, almost daily protests have challenged President Aleksandar Vucic's stronghold on power.

Protests Gain Widespread Support

Stevan Lazic, another Luznice resident, expressed support for the students' demands. "The majority of people in Serbia support the students' requests," he stated. The students' resolve and creativity resonate with many citizens who feel disillusioned with politicians and doubt that meaningful change is achievable.

The students demand full transparency regarding the canopy collapse and accountability for recent attacks on protesters. The upcoming rally in Kragujevac, about 100 kilometres south of Belgrade, is expected to attract tens of thousands. This event coincides with Serbia's Statehood Day celebrations.

Historical Significance of Kragujevac

Students are converging on Kragujevac from various directions, some running or cycling, waving Serbian flags. They chose this location because it was where Serbia declared a constitution in 1835 under Ottoman rule, aiming to limit rulers' powers.

President Vucic plans a concurrent rally with his supporters in Sremska Mitrovica, northwest of Belgrade. He has announced a declaration against an alleged separatist movement threatening Serbia's unity.

Vucic's Response to Protests

In recent months, President Vucic has shifted his stance from accusing students of foreign influence to offering concessions and claiming he has met their demands. While he aims for Serbia to join the European Union, he faces accusations of widespread government corruption and suppression of democratic freedoms during his tenure.

The ongoing protests highlight the growing dissatisfaction among Serbians with their leadership and governance. As the rally approaches, the determination of these young protesters continues to inspire hope for change across the nation.
