The incident occurred a day after Libya's interior minister escaped unharmed an assassination attempt.

Libya has been wracked with political violence and instability since the end of the civil war in 2011, which saw many armed militias formed in the country. Since then there has been rise in incidents of assassinations targeting politicians and security officials, who have tried to crack down on the militias.
