18-Month-Old Dies After Anaesthesia In Kerala, Family Alleges Medical Negligence

Child Was Being Treated For Lip Injury

Devansh Shaurya was taken to hospital after he fell while playing outside home and occurred a cut on lip. The only child of T Suraj, a residental of Eramam- Kuttoor, Kannur fell down on 5 July and intial he was taken for first aid at Primary Health Centre in Mathamangalam. As the child needed more treatment he was taken to Baby Memorial Hospital in Payyannur.

The doctors at the hospital gave the child anaesthesia, and stiched the wound. However, the incident took turn when the child fell unconscious after anaesthesia was given. After the seriousness of the incident the child was transferred for speical treatment, however, despite a long fight the child died around 9 PM on Friday.

Police Register Case Against Doctor

The death of the child gave shock to the family and they allege it was hospital staff and doctor who neglected in the treatment.

Now after the family's complaint, Police registered the case against doctor ANjali Poduval under Section 125 (BNS). According to Sector 125 Under Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, the person found guily will have to face maximum punishment of six months.

Police is now doing investigation what happened and how the treatment led to the Child's death. However, the hospital is denying any negligence in the treatment and saying that the treatment was done under utmost care.

Hospital Rejects Medical Negligence Allegation

The hospital made an official statement saying that the child suffered cardiac arrest just after the anaesthesia was given to him. They also said that the child was shifted to vantilator before before rushed to Kannur facility for advance treatment.

The hospital staff is saying that complications to child can occur after giving anaesthesia even after giving correct dosage and standard medical procedures. They said that they tried all the very best treatment for the child to save his life, and all the possible efforts were made.
